Mail Order Brides. These three words can invoke thoughts of fantasy, romance, intrigue, or mystery. Imagine a beautiful native woman walking barefoot in the sand. They are attired in traditional native dress, with a mocha tan covering their healthy figure. Paradise.
Okay, let’s leave the land of dreams and enter the realm of reality. A mail order bride can come from any country. They may be from the South Pacific, Russia, Japan, S. Korea, China, or Brazil. In fact, they might be from any country or continent.
I tried the correspondence method, then later, online dating. Of course, keep in mind that your profile or hers is only as reliable as the information you share. It is difficult to verify information from overseas. Photos of your prospective mate might be doctored or from any social media source. I once chatted with a woman who sent me a picture of a beautiful Irish woman with red hair, beautiful green eyes, and a fit body. She claimed to have recently relocated stateside. After researching this “lady” I found out this person (unsure if they were male or female) was living somewhere in Nigeria. If it had been a woman from Nigeria and she would have been honest enough to share that we might have gotten together. Alas, the disadvantage of texting in messenger rather than talking or using cameras.
I found many scammers and fakes across multiple dating sites. “Buyer beware?” Well, you don’t really buy anyone but you might end up spending money on them with gifts, airfare to visit them and so forth.
For a better part of a year. I chatted with many women across the globe. I could care less what their nationality, race, or ethnic origins were. A prospective wife should be a caring, loyal, and loving person. That is far more important than their appearance.
Unfortunately, I came across many women who were looking for a sugar daddy not a partner. I can’t blame them as our living standard here in the USA is higher than a vast number of countries.
The Philippines is a popular destination to find a mail order bride. Dating sites usually feature many Filipina’s to choose from. They speak English, are beautiful, generally religious, and know how to survive on a budget far less than Western women do.
Yet, there are scammers! Some might request money or misrepresent their appearance, financial status, or even marital status (divorce is illegal in the Philippines). Yes, there are some women who will seek you out and use you.
What people don’t seem to understand is that the western man who chats with Filipina’s may be even more of a scammer than they. I worked with Expat (British, American, Canadian) men who came to the Philippines only to use women, promise a relationship, meet her family, then dump her. Likewise, there are Filipina’s who use an expat to get money, etc. then dump him.
I realize this article is all over the place but after spending over 8 years in the Philippines, I have a lot of stories to share.
Bottom line: Should you seek out foreign women on the internet? Yes, if you are sincere about finding a wife not a “toy.”
- find a reputable online dating site
- be honest on your profile, but don’t provide anything that could expose your address, banking information, etc.
- arrange to meet in person at some point before you get too serious
- when you meet someone overseas, do so in a safe place
Yes, it is risky for both parties, but any potential relationship can be as well. By the way, if you do go overseas to meet a prospective wife, please take pictures together, keep airline ticket receipts, etc. Should you want to later sponsor them for a visa, you need to prove your relationship with pictures, airline tickets, letters, etc.
I met my wife overseas via a Christian Dating website. However, I was already working overseas and we were able to meet in person within a week of chatting. That is not the norm, unless you take a job overseas.
This posting is just my opinion. You have to make decisions based on your own research and experience. Be careful, be respectful, and don’t choose anyone based on plans for a short-time fling. A wife is something to treasure, no matter where they come from.
