Poem: Passing of a Childhood Friend

The years of past, memories remain,

of a distant childhood, let me explain.

A childhood friend, was it puppy love?

Beyond kids understanding, far above.

A school play part, a married couple,

recalling that performance, dare I chuckle?

Admiring her intelligence, smarter than mine,

her red hair and freckles, how perfect, how fine.

So very long ago, family moving away,

Been over fifty years, I’m daring to say.

Later finding her on social media, lots changed,

we were different people, niceties exchanged.

Old classmates of sorts, small talk was all,

was nice to catching up, but beginning to stall.

heard nothing from her, then saw a post,

message appearing, from her blog co-host.

Sharing news, my heart nearly stopped,

Recalling past events, my jaw nearly dropped.

My childhood friend passing, a tragic event,

lifestyle consequences, losing effort to prevent.

Still carrying the loss, a special place in my heart,

of childhood feelings, that will never depart.

Life continues to evolve, we build on the past,

Each day brings change, but memories last.

God Bless you “P!”
