At times like these, I envy countries like the United Kingdom. Every four years, we have to go through a painful and at times, obnoxious electoral process, to choose both our Head of State and Head of Government. Unfortunately, the winner is liked by a little over half of the people.
Countries like the United Kingdom have a Constitutional Monarchy. The person serves for life or until they abdicate. They are Head of State and perform many ceremonial duties. The monarch is above politics and serves all the people. They provide consistency, and can operate the government in an emergency. A monarch receives formal training from the royal family and often, well-known educational institutions.
Our President wins an election. Most have already served as politicians but come with a diversity of work and educational experience. Some excel as leaders of a nation while some fail miserably. Often, the best we can hope for is someone who is slightly better than worse.
Countries like Germany have a Chancellor and a President. The President is head of State, but the Chancellor runs the day to day government. However, the President has emergency powers.
In recent years, some athletes and others have declined invitations to the White House due to political ideology. Our president is seen as a political pawn not the leader of all Americans. Sad, isn’t it.
We need a Head of State who could provide consistency, greet diplomats, conduct goodwill visits in and outside of our nation, and bestow honors. Possibly, they could hold emergency powers in time of crisis, due to electoral problems, disasters, etc.
Our great Superpower nation needs consistent and fair leadership, a role model, not a revolving door, political pawn, who every four years needs to play dirty to get re-elected, then must be respected by all. Let a politician run the government and a monarch or elected Head of State serve as a consistent role model we can all be proud of. Just my opinion.
Note: We would need to call a Constitutional Convention to make such changes.
